Design and Development of the CNAO Synchrotrone Control System

Among SIDeA’s meaningful experiences in the field of particle accelerators is the development of the entire control system of the CNAO synchroton (National Center for Oncological Adrotherapy), a particle accelerator that began in 2011 to treat cancer patients with subatomic particles called hadrons.

The synchrotron is an imposing structure located in a 1.600 square meter bunker in the heart of the CNAO Foundation headquarters, it has the shape of a ring with a diameter of 25 meters and a circumference of 80 meters and is isolated from the rest of the structure with shields for radiation in reinforced concrete ranging from 2 to 6 meters thick.

The synchrotron technology is similar to that used by CERN in Geneva, but unlike particle accelerators in physics laboratories, the synchrotron was designed and built specifically for the clinical treatment of cancer patients.
